Learn More About Hepatology

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease affecting primarily the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The infection is often asymptomatic, but chronic infection can lead to damage and even cirrhosis, a permanent scarring of the liver. In some cases, those with cirrhosis will go on to develop liver failure, liver cancer, or life-threatening esophageal and gastric varices that can require significant medical intervention including hospitalization and liver transplant.

Who Does it Effect?

HCV affects about 3.2 million people in the U.S with the most common being genotype 1 HCV.

How Does it Spread?

Hepatitis is most commonly transmitted by exposure to infected blood.

What Are the Symptoms?

Many people with Hepatitis have no symptoms initially, but patients could notice: jaundice, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, and fatigue.
