The news that you or a loved one will require hospice care at home comes with a lot of mixed emotions and is an understandably very sensitive time for any family. Although your care will change while under hospice care, your well-being is still the greatest concern of all the professionals you trust.
While we don't provide hospice services specifically, Paragon is proud to partner with hospice agencies in our communities. Paragon helps to supply them with many medications that, alongside other treatments, help a patient in hospice or palliative care remain as comfortable as possible.
Paragon is honored to be a part of each patient's hospice journey. We will be there to provide swift, effective, and sensitive care for as long as we are needed. In addition, our pharmacists are trained to prioritize hospice patients' needs and ensure all medications arrive when they are required.
What can we treat?
First, we offer a comprehensive range of infusion and injection treatments to treat hundreds of different diseases or conditions and to manage pain and comfort levels. Our pharmacy will work closely with your physician and hospice provider to determine what therapies you need and in what dosages.
One of the most common fears for patients going on hospice care or for their loved ones is whether or not they will be in pain. Paragon utilizes a broad range of services, including narcotics, non-narcotics, or a combination of both to address a patient's pain management needs. At every step of the process, Paragon will work closely with your physician and hospice agency and respect each patient's personal medication choices.
Symptom management during hospice care can be much more comprehensive than simply managing pain. We also offer a comprehensive Nutrition Support program, which can keep a patient nourished when regular ingestion of food isn't possible. Our team of clinical experts, including dietitians, pharmacists, and nurse liaisons, will work with your physician or hospice agency to determine the right nutrition plan for you or your loved one.
Another issue with hospice and palliative care that can easily be forgotten is that of dehydration. Patients may suffer from a lack of fluids due to the condition they are dealing with, or medication is used to treat that condition or manage its symptoms, so Paragon provides a wide range of intravenously delivered fluids to help keep a patient hydrated as well as nourished.
There will be complex questions regarding providing appropriate nutrition, hydration, and if certain medications should be continued at the end of a patient's life. Every patient's journey through hospice is unique, and Paragon can provide unique solutions if and when it is clinically appropriate to do so.
The Paragon difference
Patients receiving home hospice or palliative care are a top priority in our pharmacies. We provide infusible and injectable therapies for people across the country, but we recognize that patients receiving hospice care have a much greater sense of urgency. When you or a loved one need pain medication, nutrition or hydration infusions, it's not something that can wait.
And we don't wait. Our pharmacy service representatives work around the clock to ensure that our hospice patients have immediate access to whatever treatments they require. We know this is a challenging experience for any family, and the last thing you should have to deal with is anxiety over whether or not your infusion treatments will be received in a timely way.
Along the way, Paragon will also continue to monitor the patient's progress and communicate with a patient's physician, documenting care and making any changes to treatment as necessary. No matter what, the patient will always be at the forefront of priority during their hospice or palliative care.
